What is an SSL certificate?
An SSL certificate helps provide an encrypted connection between the visitor’s browser and your website. It protects passwords, contact form data and order information from being read or altered in transit.
Such a connection is indicated by HTTPS. It is needed for online stores and simple company websites alike. Technically, encryption is provided by the TLS protocol, but the service is still commonly called SSL.

Frequently asked questions about SSL
Is the SSL certificate free with Area IT hosting?

Yes. SSL certificate installation and automatic renewal are included in all Area IT hosting plans. This applies to the domains and subdomains added to your hosting with correct DNS settings. There is no separate charge for SSL.
How does free SSL differ from a paid certificate?

Free SSL also provides a secure, encrypted connection. A paid certificate does not in itself mean stronger encryption. OV and EV certificates additionally include company identity validation, which may be needed if you have special requirements.
Is free SSL suitable for an online store?

Yes. It is suitable for protecting login, contact form and order data in transit. Payment card data is usually processed by the payment service provider. The online store software and the payment solution must also be set up correctly and updated regularly.
Do I have to renew the SSL certificate myself?

The free SSL certificate included in hosting is renewed automatically before its validity expires. You do not have to order a new certificate manually. If you receive a warning about its expiry, contact technical support.
Do I need to enable HTTPS on my website?

Installing the certificate allows the website to use HTTPS. An existing website may need an HTTP to HTTPS redirect and updated site addresses or links in its settings.
If the certificate is installed but the browser still shows a warning, submit a support request. We will help find the reason.
Why doesn’t my domain have SSL yet?

The domain must be added to the hosting, and its DNS settings must allow domain validation for issuing the certificate. After adding a domain or changing DNS, you may need to wait until the changes take effect.
If SSL still does not work or you see an error in the browser, contact us and provide the domain and the error message.
Can free SSL also be used outside Area IT hosting?

Yes. Free SSL certificates can also be used on other providers’ servers if they support the solution. On Area IT hosting we provide automatic installation and renewal. On another server this has to be arranged separately. If you need advice, contact us.
Can I install my own SSL certificate?

Yes. You can install your own certificate in the cPanel “SSL/TLS” section. If you need help, submit a support request. The renewal process of a separately installed certificate may differ from the free SSL included in hosting.
When is an OV or EV certificate needed?

Such a certificate may be needed if company identity validation is required by your partner, tender rules or security policy. Tell us about your requirements, and we will help you choose and install a suitable certificate.
