A transfer only changes the registrar — the owner, website and email stay the same. The route depends on where the domain is now:
- .lv domain registered with NIC — one email to NIC is enough, with no EPP code and no fee.
- Domain with another registrar — you need an EPP code from your current registrar.
How to choose a domain name
Requirements for a .lv domain
- LengthFrom 2 to 63 characters.
- CharactersLatin letters, digits and hyphens. A hyphen cannot be at the beginning or end, and spaces are not allowed.
- DiacriticsThe letters ā, ē, ī, ū, ō, ķ, ļ, ņ, ŗ, ģ, š, č, ž are also allowed.
- OwnerAny individual (aged 18 or over) or company from any country. The number of domains is unlimited.
Tips for a good name
- Short and easy to pronounce. You should be able to say the name over the phone without spelling it out.
- Matches your brand. Use your company or product name rather than a random string of keywords.
- No unnecessary hyphens or digits. They are often forgotten or confused.
- Protect your brand. Register the same name as .eu or .com as well, so that others cannot take it.
- Do not delay. A name that is available today may be taken tomorrow.
What happens to a domain after registration
The life cycle of a .lv domain — so you know when to renew it and what happens if the invoice is not paid.
- RegisteredThe domain is yours for the period you chose.
- InvoiceAn invoice for renewal is issued one month before expiry.
- ReminderIf the invoice is not paid, a reminder is sent to the contact persons by email.
- SuspendedAn unpaid domain is suspended for 30 days.
- AvailableAfter that the domain is available again and anyone can register it.
Pay the invoice at any time before the domain is released, and it is renewed for the next period.

Choice and prices
If your customers are mainly in Latvia, .lv is the best choice — people recognise it as local and trustworthy. .com suits an international brand, and .eu suits a company operating in several EU countries. It is often worthwhile to register the same name in several zones so that others cannot take it.
Area IT prices including VAT for one year: .lv — €14.52, .eu — €10.00, .com — €15.00, .net — €16.00. For these domains renewal costs the same as registration. Transferring a .lv domain to Area IT is free, while transferring .eu, .com and .net costs the same as one year of registration. Prices updated in October 2026.

Any individual or company from any country. An individual must be at least 18 years old; parents or guardians can sign the contract on behalf of a minor. The number of domains per person is unlimited.
A .com domain can be registered by anyone, with no country or company restrictions. A .eu domain can be registered by a citizen or resident of the EU or EEA, or by a company registered there.
.lv domains in which Latvian letters with diacritics can be used, for example mājaslapa.lv. They work just like ordinary domains.
Registration and maintenance
Yes. You can register a domain separately and add hosting later, or point the domain to another server using DNS records.
Yes. A .lv domain registered directly with NIC can be transferred for free with one email, while a domain with another registrar needs an EPP code. The owner, website and email stay the same. You will find the steps, a sample letter and prices on the domain transfer page.
You will receive an invoice one month before expiry. If it is not paid, a .lv domain is suspended for 30 days, after which anyone else can register it. For .com and other domains too, the website and email stop working after expiry, so renew in good time.
For an individual, .lv WHOIS does not show the name, email, phone or address — only the domain, status and DNS servers are visible. A company's name and contacts are public. For .com and other domains, personal data in WHOIS is usually hidden. You can check a domain's WHOIS at whois.area.lv.
