How does website migration to another host work?

We start by assessing your website and migration options. We then agree on the scope of work, a suitable hosting plan and the migration timing.

1

Submit your request

Provide your website address and let us know whether email also needs to be migrated. Add any important requirements and your preferred timing in the comments.

2

We agree on the migration

We assess technical compatibility, the access needed and the scope of work. Once confirmed, choose and pay for your hosting plan.

3

We migrate and test

We migrate the agreed data and test how the site runs in the new environment before switching over visitor traffic.

4

We switch over and confirm everything works

We agree on DNS changes and check the site after switching. Only cancel your old hosting once you've confirmed the migration is fully complete.

What can we migrate, and what needs to be agreed?

The scope of migration depends on your website's platform, the data available and the services you use. We agree on the specific steps before starting work.

Migration is free when you choose and pay for an Area IT hosting plan. Email and domain migration options and terms are agreed separately.

Website files and database

We migrate your site's files and database to the new server, keeping the existing content and structure.

WordPress websites

We migrate your WordPress installation along with your theme and plugin settings. Take a look at our WordPress hosting plans too.

WooCommerce stores and orders

Migrating a WooCommerce store requires agreeing on new orders and other changing data. Take a look at our online store hosting plans too.

Other compatible platforms

We assess migration options for other open-source platforms individually - the name alone isn't a guarantee of compatibility.

Email content and accounts

The scope of email migration depends on your current service and the access available - terms are agreed separately.

DNS records and connection

We agree on the DNS changes needed so the site points to the new hosting after migration.

Changing domain registrar

Changing domain registrar is a separate action - it's not the same as a DNS change or website migration, and its cost isn't included in the free migration offer. Read more about domain transfers.

Post-migration testing

After migration, we check the functions that matter for your project - pages, images, forms, HTTPS and, where relevant, core store functionality.

Yes, we migrate WordPress websites and WooCommerce stores. Migrating a WooCommerce store also requires agreeing on new orders and other data generated after the migration starts, so nothing is lost.

We migrate and test the site in the new environment before switching over visitor traffic, to minimise any disruption. We'll agree on exact terms for your migration.
Yes, you can keep your domain with its current registrar - you don't have to change it when migrating your website. If you'd also like to change registrar, that's a separate action, distinct from a DNS change.
Both options are available. The scope of email migration depends on your current service and access options, so terms are agreed individually.
Changing hosting alone doesn't require changing your domain or page addresses. To minimise the impact on search results, you need to keep the site's content, addresses and key SEO settings, and check availability on the new server. Unchanged Google rankings can't be guaranteed. 301 redirects are only needed if URLs change - they don't need to be set up automatically just because you're changing servers.
Before migrating, it helps to have access to your current site and a clear list of what you'd like to migrate. We recommend keeping your old hosting active until you've confirmed the migration and the site's performance on the new server are fully complete and tested.
