Two routes

Choose your transfer route

For a .lv domain registered with NIC an email is enough; in other cases you need an EPP code.

Which route is yours? It depends on where the domain is registered now. If you are not sure, check it in WHOIS — the Registrar field shows which company manages the domain.

.lv domain registered with NIC — by email

If you registered the domain yourself in the NIC system, you do not need an EPP code and there is nothing to pay.

  2. 2Enter your domainThe letter below fills itself in.
  3. 3Send the letter to dns@nic.lvSend it from the email address listed in the domain contact details. NIC will not accept a request from any other address.

Domain with another registrar — with an EPP code

Applies to .lv domains held by another company and to all .com, .eu and other domains. An EPP code is a password for the domain, issued by your current registrar.

  2. 2Submit the transfer requestEnter the domain in the Area IT order form and add the EPP code. If you do not have an Area IT account yet, you will create one during the order.
  3. 3Confirm by emailYou will receive an email with a confirmation link. After that the transfer runs by itself, usually within a few days.
Request the transfer

.com, .net and similar domains can be transferred if at least 60 days have passed since registration and at least 7 days remain until expiry. If something goes wrong, see common situations.

What changes and what stays the same after the transfer

A transfer is not a new registration. It only changes the company that manages your domain.

Stays the same

  • Domain owner — the domain still belongs to you or your company.
  • Domain name — the address does not change.
  • Website and email — keep working without interruption if the DNS servers are not changed.
  • Hosting — can stay with your current provider if you wish.

Changes

  • Registrar — Area IT will manage the domain from now on.
  • Invoices — renewal invoices are issued by Area IT.
  • Management — you see and manage the domain in your Area IT account.
  • Support — you get help in Latvian, Russian or English.

SituationWhat to do
No access to the contact emailFirst change the contact email to one you can access. If a .lv domain is registered with NIC, you can do this in the NIC online system or with a signed application — the forms (in Latvian) are available on nic.lv. If the domain is with another registrar, ask that registrar to change it. Once the email is changed, continue with the transfer.
The registrar does not issue the EPP codeFirst check the registrar’s client panel — the EPP code is often available in the domain settings (Transfer, Auth code or EPP code). If it is not there, request the code in writing from the domain’s contact email. For .com and similar domains the registrar must issue the code within 5 days — if it is late, remind them of this rule or write to us.
The EPP code is not acceptedCheck that the code was copied exactly, without spaces. If it still does not work, request a new code.
The domain is lockedTurn off the transfer lock at your current registrar and submit the transfer request again.
The domain was registered less than 60 days agoYou will be able to transfer .com and similar domains once 60 days have passed.
The domain expires in less than 7 daysFirst renew the domain at your current registrar, then submit the transfer request.
FAQ

Questions about domain transfer

Before you transfer

A domain transfer means the registrar changes — the company that manages your domain and issues invoices for its renewal. The domain owner, domain name, website and email stay the same.

Look up the domain in WHOIS, for example whois.area.lv. The Registrar field shows the company that manages the domain now. This determines whether a .lv domain can be transferred by email or needs an EPP code.

Transferring a .lv domain to Area IT is free. Transferring .eu, .com and .net costs the same as one year of registration: .eu — €10.00, .com — €15.00, .net — €16.00. Prices include VAT.

Yes, the domain is linked to your Area IT account. For a .lv domain registered with NIC, create the account before sending the letter; when you request a transfer with an EPP code, you create the account during the order.

Yes. Domain registration and hosting are separate services. If the DNS servers are not changed, the domain will still point to the same hosting after the transfer.

.lv domains

If a .lv domain is registered directly with NIC, no EPP code is needed — an email to dns@nic.lv is enough. If a .lv domain is with another registrar, you need to get an EPP code from that registrar and submit the transfer in the Area IT order form.

From the email address listed in the domain contact details. NIC does not act on letters from other addresses. If you no longer have access to that address, first change it in the NIC online system or with a signed application, then send the letter.

After receiving the email, NIC changes the registrar in up to 3 business days. When transferring with an EPP code, the transfer usually takes a few days.

After the transfer, Area IT issues the domain renewal invoices, and you will see them in your Area IT account. Renewing a .lv domain costs €14.52 per year including VAT.

Other domains and the EPP code

An EPP (authorisation) code is a password for the domain that confirms you are the owner and agree to the transfer. It is issued by the registrar where the domain is now — usually in its client panel or on request to support.

For .com, .net and similar domains, international rules prohibit a transfer within 60 days of registration or of the previous transfer. This protects domains from unauthorised transfers.

Yes, when transferring .com and similar domains, the term is extended by one year, and the time you have already paid for is not lost. That is why the transfer price equals one year of registration.

Check the registrar’s client panel — the code is often available in the domain settings (Transfer, Auth code or EPP code). If it is not there, request it in writing from the domain’s contact email. For .com and similar domains the registrar must issue the code within 5 days. If it is late, remind them of this rule or write to us.

After the transfer

Yes. A transfer changes only the registrar. If the DNS servers are not changed, the website and email keep working without interruption.

No, if your hosting stays with the current provider. You only need to change the DNS servers if you want the domain to point to Area IT hosting — then we will help you do it.

Yes. The domain is yours, and you can transfer it to another registrar at any time.
